Why is protein good for you?

I got caught working at the gym a little later then expected yesterday so I ran over to Walmart to grab lunch.   I grabbed the bistro organic cranberry walnut spinach salad, passion fruit wheat grass smoothie drink, and power crunch protein bar (my little treat).

 

When I was checking out, the clerk scanned my salad, scanned my wheat grass drink, and then starred and studied the protein bar for at least 30 seconds which seemed like an eternity when other people are waiting to be checked out.

 

Then she asked me "why protein is so good for you..." and that she is trying to lose weight. 

 

Feeling a little under pressure because there is a line of people staring at me probably getting a little annoyed because they want to check out,  I gave her the fastest and simplest answer I could come up with. 

 

Basically I told her that protein is the building blocks of building muscle but she shouldn't get caught up in just how much protein something has but instead focus on staying away from processed foods and getting a balanced diet of protein, fat, and carbs.  I then of course invited her over to HT Fitness to get more information and let us help her in her weight-loss journey.

 

I wanted share this story with you because there are a couple lessons here.

 

1.  Even though I didn't bring my lunch to work I didn't skip lunch nor go to fast food to get something to eat.  There are plenty of healthy options at Walmart and HEB.  Find things that are healthy and you like at the grocery store and those can be your fail safe's when you get caught out and about without food.

 

2.  Sometimes we tend to focus on the wrong things.  Out of the 3 items that I bought she focused on the worst of the 3.  Basically she was most interested in what I treated as my dessert.  She should of been paying attention to the spinach salad I bought instead of the protein bar. 

 

It is best to take a step back and make sure we are focused on the right things.  It is so easy to get caught up spending most of our time on things that don't have much of an impact.
