5 Quick Tips to Avoid Weight Gain on Thanksgiving.

November 13, 2018

Unfortunately for most people, during Thanksgiving and the Holidays we tend to gain weight.  We either gain the weight back we lost through the year or put on extra pounds to tip the scale at all time highs.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Here are 5 tips on how you can make it through Thanksgiving and have a healthy holiday versus one we regret later on.

1.  Change your attitude about Thanksgiving.  Is it about stuffing yourself senseless or about giving Thanks?  Make the focus on spending time with friends and family then about eating.

2.  If your in charge of cooking the Thanksgiving meal, don’t over do it.  For our normal meals we have 1 main dish and maybe 2 sides.  For some reason for Thanksgiving we always have, 2 or 3 meats including turkey, ham, duck.  4 or 5 sides including green bean dish, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, creamed corn, stuffing, rolls.  And to top it off 3 or 4 deserts.

Do we really need that much food? Granted if you have lots of family and friends over you may need that food but if you can do without and choose 1 or 2 dishes, that would be a better option. Plus less clean up.

3. Be selective in what you eat. If there is a smorgasbord of food, choose your favorites. Pick just 1 or 2 dishes and limit the desert you have. You can also space it out. I am sure there will be leftovers so if you chose the pumpkin pie, odds are there will be blueberry pie for you to have the next day.

4. Walk it off. Despite our best intentions we may overeat on Thanksgiving. Instead of going into a food coma and falling asleep on the coach, go for a walk after you eat or go do something active. I promise you will feel a ton better.

5. Don’t skip breakfast. Sometimes we don’t eat all day in anticipation and are starving by the time we Thanksgiving. When we are super hungry we tend to overeat. There is also a flip side to this too. Sometimes, there are appetizers and snacks out before the main meal and we stuff ourselves before we even sit down for Thanksgiving. Be sensible and have a plan for yourself so you don’t over do it.

But Most Important of All, Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
